Working at UBS in Australia
We are committed to Australia and provide a full range of investment banking
services. Unlike most of our international competitors we treat Australia
as a home market. We operate like a local firm, but of course we derive
huge benefits from our global linkages outside Australia with UBS Group.
As part of a leading global provider of financial services, we offer our
people in Australia a wide range of career paths and as well as international
opportunities. If you have intellectual firepower, vision and energy and
can combine entrepreneurial flair with being a team player, then consider
a career with us.
We aim to recruit people who are intellectually first-rate, team players,
and who combine commercial instincts with the ability to work in a complex
organisation.
We believe that both innovation and client relationships are strengthened
by hiring a diverse range of people. We look for ability irrespective
of gender, ethnicity, cultural background or other differences.
Graduate / Postgraduate opportunities
We have a limited number of opportunities for graduates and postgraduates
each year, typically employing 6 to 8 trainees.
We are highly selective, and are looking for individuals who combine excellent
intellect with entrepreneurial drive and team skills. We also look for
people who can make a contribution to our own culture, and can balance
a challenging job with active interests outside work.
There are generally graduate opportunities in the revenue functions (Corporate
Finance, Equities, and Fixed Income, Rates & Currencies) and in Logistics
(Operations, Financial Control and Information Technology).
Just as we welcome people with a wide range of cultural backgrounds, we
also welcome those with a diversity of academic backgrounds. While a Commerce,
Accounting or Finance degree is more usual, if you are the right person,
you can join us from any university discipline. Clearly we will always
expect an appropriate level of numeracy. Graduates with postgraduate qualifications
would normally be expected to have the qualification in a business relevant
discipline.
All graduate recruits participate in our global graduate training program
which involves formal training alongside graduate recruits from other
functions, and learning on the job.
There are three graduate training streams all of which involve an offshore
component:
For Fixed Income and Equities the graduate training
program is a fast-paced introduction to the firm aimed at creating
a high-level bridge between academic life and the competitive world
of investment banking.
For Corporate Finance (sometimes referred to as Investment Banking)
the Analyst training program is a 7 week program which is an introduction
to a two year program based on classroom training, experiential
learning and practice exercises.
For Operations there is also an Analyst training program which
combines on the job and off the job training and lasts 15 months.
Generally we prefer to employ graduates who have successfully completed
internships in our Sydney or Melbourne offices.
For undergraduates/postgraduates who wish to apply directly
the application must be made via the Internet. at www.ubs.com/graduates
Applicants will be required to complete an online application form,
which is part of the selection process. Those who pass through this filter
will be required to attend interviews and take psychometric tests.
Intern
Each summer we select a limited number of outstanding undergraduates/postgraduates
for 6 week internships with the firm. We aim to offer fulltime positions
to those who successfully complete internships.
The intern program involves working in the business and combines on the
job experience with classroom training. It is an excellent opportunity
for interns to find out about us and for us to see if they have got what
it takes to be a successful investment banker.
Interns participate in the day to day work of the department which they
are based, work on live projects, and contribute to deals.
Every intern is assigned a ‘buddy’ to provide guidance and
advice – typically a recent graduate recruit, and a mentor (typically
an experienced manager).
At the end of the internship each intern’s contribution is formally
appraised. Those interns to whom we wish to offer a job after graduation
will then be required to take a number of formal interviews and psychometric
tests before a formal job offer is made.
Internships are available in Corporate Finance, Fixed Income, Rates &
Currencies, Equities, Operations and IT. Internships are generally offered
only to Australian residents.
